Everyone's rushing to put servers everywhere, but most 'edge computing' is just overpriced CDNs with delusions of grandeur. Here's why your distributed system probably didn't need to be distributed.

Suddenly, every company is breathlessly explaining why they absolutely must distribute their application across 200+ global locations. Your simple CRUD app apparently needs to run on every continent, because⌠latency?
Hereâs the uncomfortable truth: Most âedge computingâ is just expensive CDN cosplay.
The marketing pitch is seductive: âRun your code everywhere! Millisecond latency! Global scale!â The reality is youâre taking a perfectly functional centralized application and turning it into a distributed debugging nightmare that costs 10x more and breaks in creative new ways.
Letâs be honest about whatâs actually happening. Your startupâs todo app doesnât need to run in Singapore. Your e-commerce site serving the US market doesnât benefit from having servers in Mumbai. Youâre not Netflix. Youâre not handling global real-time gaming. Youâre probably serving a few thousand users in two time zones, yet youâve convinced yourself you need infrastructure that would make Amazon jealous.
The dirty secret is that most edge computing implementations are solving problems that donât exist.
The classic edge computing demo always shows the same misleading comparison: âLook! 200ms from Virginia vs 20ms from the edge!â What they donât show you is that your application spends 300ms querying a database thatâs still in Virginia. Congratulations, youâve optimized the wrong bottleneck and added operational complexity for a 5% improvement in total response time.
Even better are the companies doing âedge computingâ by running the same monolith in multiple regions and calling it distributed. You havenât built edge computingâyouâve built expensive redundancy with extra failure modes.
But hereâs the plot twist: the problem isnât edge computing itself.
The problem is that weâre using a distributed systems solution for single-system problems. Weâre taking applications designed for centralized deployment and smearing them across the globe, wondering why they donât work as well as they used to.
Real edge computing isnât about running your entire application everywhere. Itâs about identifying the specific bottlenecks that actually benefit from geographic distributionâauthentication, image optimization, simple data processingâand solving those problems locally while keeping complex business logic centralized.
The winners in edge computing arenât the companies trying to distribute everything. Theyâre the ones smart enough to identify which 10% of their application logic benefits from being close to users, and disciplined enough to keep the other 90% simple and centralized.
Edge computing works brilliantly when you use it to solve edge problems. It fails spectacularly when you use it to avoid making hard architectural decisions about your main application.
Your users donât care that your authentication runs in 47 countries. They care that your app loads quickly and works reliably. Sometimes that means edge computing. More often, it means fixing your database queries and optimizing your assets.
The future belongs to teams that can tell the difference.
